The programme consists of 8 seminars (1 in OT, 1 in NT, 2 in Historical Theology, 2 in Moral Theology, and 2 in Systematic Theology) and a thesis making a total of 30 credit units.
Practical knowledge of one modern language apart from English, as well as Hebrew, Greek and Latin are to be demonstrated by the candidate.

OLD TESTAMENT

DI/TH 500      Wisdom Literature                 3 credits         

In view of a contemporary appropriation, the seminar aims at an in-depth analysis of the wisdom movement in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near East and a detailed consideration of certain aspects and texts of the wisdom books.

DI/TH 501      Prophets                     3 credits         

A study of the history and phenomenon of prophecy in the religion of ancient Israel.  Special focus will be paid to the socio-political context and literary and theological issues in the writings of the prophets and on their relevance today.

NEW TESTAMENT

DI/TH 502      Synoptic Gospels                   3 credits
With the quest for the historical Jesus and the development of early Christianity in mind, the seminar will attempt a detailed study of the context, structure, parallels, historico-geographical background, literary genre, theology and influence of the Synoptic Gospels.
3 credits.

DI/TH 503      Johannine Literature             3 credits                                 
A study of the structure, genre, background, distinctive style and theology of the Gospel according to John, the Epistles of John, and the Book of Apocalypse.  Special focus will be given to their contribution to Christology and ecclesiology.
3 credits.

HISTORICAL THEOLOGY

DI/TH 504      History of Doctrine                3 credits         

By referring to and consulting patristic texts, the seminar attempts a study of the development and inter-relationship of the doctrines of Trinity and Christology from the Pre-Nicene Period to the immediate post-Chalcedonian period, that is, the first half of the 6th century.

DI/TH 505      Patrology                    3 credits                                             

The seminar aims at a critical study of the life and any major theological writing of  a Church father.  Special focus will be on the chosen Church father’s contribution to Trinitarian theology, Christology and ecclesiology.
3 credits.

MORAL THEOLOGY

DI/TH 506      Foundations of Moral Theology                    3 credits

A study of principles and methods underlying the evaluation of human action in traditional African culture, in Scripture, and in the teachings of the Church’s Magisterium.
3 credits.

DI/TH 507      Theology of Sexuality                        3 credits

An examination of the theological significance of human sexuality and of the institution of marriage as the place where sexuality finds its proper meaning.
3 credits.

DI/TH 508      Bioethics                     3 credits

A theological appraisal of ethical issues of modern technologies such as in vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, informed consent, and euthanasia with attention to traditional African values.
3 credits.

DI/TH 509      Catholic Social Teachings                 3 credits

A close and critical reading of a selected encyclical with a view to examining its social and political context, scriptural and patristic sources, philosophical presuppositions and implications, and relevance to specific socio-political and economic issues in Africa.
3 credits.

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY

DI/TH 510      Foundations of Systematic Theology                        3 credits         

This seminar attempts an examination of foundational questions in systematic theology.  Revelation, the self-unveiling of God which reaches its fullness in the incarnation by the power of the Holy Spirit, will provide a starting point and background for a study of the role of the Magisterium, theologians, and the sensus fidelium.
3 credits.

DI/TH 511      Further Questions in Christology                  3 credits

Presupposing and continuing DI/TH 510, this seminar will examine the person and  work of the incarnate Word and the instrumental role of the Church and sacraments in his redemptive mission.

DI/TH 512      Thesis             6 credits
The thesis is to be evaluated by the supervisor and one other examiner chosen by the Academic Board.
