The Dominican Institute
of Philosophy and Theology is an academic body controlled
and administered by the Dominican Province of Nigeria,
which is legally incorporated as the Order of Preachers,
Nigeria. The Province is governed by a Prior Provincial
and his Council, outside the time of the quadrennial
Provincial Chapter, which makes its statutes. The
Province is also governed by the Constitutions of
the Order of Friars Preachers and comes under the
jurisdiction of the Master of the Order, outside the
time of the triennial international Chapter.
Although the Dominican Institute of Philosophy and
Theology is located in the Dominican Community (Priory
of St. Thomas Aquinas), Ibadan, and is therefore hosted
by the priory, the Institute has its separate Governing
Board and statutes. |

The DI academic staff is constituted by those academic officers who, by reason of their qualifications, have been appointed either as full-time or part-time lecturers at DI. Involvement in the decision-making process of the Institute, however, is limited to its full-time academic and administrative staff.
The Head of Department has overall responsibility for staff management and control and supervision of academic functions, including research and teaching. In this regard the department has the following departmental arms:
- Examination Committee
- Programme Review Committee
- Staff Review Committee
The Departmental Academic Council meetings operate as a major decision making forum for the department. They receive and consider reports from lecturers and other officials of the department and also perform supportive administrative functions.
Besides the provisions of the Institute's Statutes, academic staff members have the following duties:
- To come regularly for lectures throughout the term, with an integral presentation of course material to students.
- To be available for supervising students' long essays.
- To notify the Dean of Studies ahead of time of absence from lectures and, in consultation with students, to make up missed lectures.
- To submit to the Dean of Studies a syllabus of each course within the first three weeks of the semester in which the course is taught; this syllabus should detail the objectives, content, method, requirements and evaluation criteria for each course, so that mutual expectations between the lecturer and students are clearly understood at the beginning of the semester.
- To submit to the Registrar's Office by the date requested all grades for courses taught.
- To keep the Dean of Studies informed of unsatisfactory work by students.
- To represent the Institute or the President, when requested, on matters that are in the interest of the Institute.
- To attend periodic meetings with the DI administration, subject to prior announcement.
- To serve on DI committees or boards, participate fully in academic planning, and assist in the administration of the Institute, when called to do so.
- To provide a six-month notice prior to self-termination of services/appointment at the Institute.
