About the Dominican Institute The proprietor of Domincan Institute is the Order of Preachers, Nigeria. This is the legal corporate name for the Province of st. Joseph the worker, Nigeria, a province of the international catholic religious ORDER OF PREACHERS, popularly known as the Dominican Order. The order of preachers was founded in 1216 by Spanish priest, Dominic de Guzman, after whom the proposed Domincan University is named. This man promoted a holistic reform at every level of society at a time generalized decadence in medieval Europe. Dominicans were invited to Nigeria in 1951 to establish an institute of Thomostic Studies to complement the education of Nigerian University Students and Graduates, particulary in the areas of philosophy and social ethics, since there was no legal provision at that time for them to establish a university of their own. The institute of Thomostic Studies in Lagos later graduated into the Dominican Institute, ibadan. From the beginning, it admitted clerical and lay, male and female students.
The Dominican Institute was affiliated to the University of Ibadan in 1994 for the award of the B.A in philosophy(single honours) and Philosophy and Religious Studies(combined honours) also affiliated to Duquesne University for the award of M.A Theology and also affiliated to Pontifical University of Saint Thomas (The Angelicum) for the award of B.Th Theology.
